Pittsburgh Steelers:
The Pittsburgh Steelers, originally known as the Pirates, are the sixth
oldest team in NFL. Arthur J. Rooney founded the team on July 8th, 1933.
There wasn’t instant success with the Steelers, it was slow and steady
progress. Their first 40 years saw them fall short of any title wins. It
wasn’t until 1972 that they finally brought their first Championship,
the AFC Central Division title. The Steelers then spent two years
building towards the games top honor, a Super Bowl win at Super Bowl IX
where Rooney was presented with the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy. After
many years of paying their dues and having their fare share of
struggles, the Steelers were on top of their game and on top of the
world. On an incredible winning streak that ran from 1972 to 1979, the
Steelers won seven AFC Central Division titles, four AFC Championships,
made it onto the playoffs in eight straight seasons. They not only
became the first team to win four Super Bowls, but they also became the
first team to win two back-to-back Super Bowls. The Steelers dominated
the 1970’s and solidified their place in the history books.
With World War II raging in the early 1940’s, some of the teams were
forced to merge due to manpower depletion. In 1943 the Steelers merged
with the Eagles. 1944 saw them merge with the Cardinals.
There are several people the Steelers have sent on to the Pro Football
Hall of Fame, including Terry Bradshaw, Bill Dudley, Chuck Knoll, Jack
Lambert Mike Webster and many more.
Through all the ups and downs the team had through the years they had
one staple, one constant, Art Rooney. Through financial stresses and
team lows Rooney was determined that pro football success would be had
for his team and for his city.
Heinz Stadium is the Pittsburgh Steelers proud home. It was constructed
in 1999 and officially opened in August of 2001. It has a natural grass
playing field and is equipped with two video scoreboards and 400
television sets. A plaza sits at the south end of the facility that
includes a retail and entertainment area. Heinz Stadium seats 64,450.
