New York Jets:
In 1959 Harry Wismer was granted an AFL franchise, the New York Titans.
Wismer kept the franchise blanketed in controversy from the beginning
which often caused the team to be overshadowed, even in victory. Not
long after the franchise went bankrupt it was bought out by 5 investors
led by David Werblin for 1,000,000,000. Upon purchasing the team, the
name was changed from the Titans to the New York Jets. Weeb Ewbank was
brought in as head coach as well. Ewbank put a rebuilding effort into
motion and the team received a major boost on January 2nd, 1965 with the
acquisition of quarterback Joe Namath. Ewbanks rallied the Jets in 1968
to an AFL Eastern Division title and then on to defeat the Oakland
Raiders for the AFL Championship. Following that they shocked the nation
by beating the favored Baltimore Colts to win Super Bowl III, making
that game one of the two most pivotal games for improving fan
enthusiasm. They repeated their Eastern title win a year later in 1969
and then fell into a 12 season divisional slump. They returned to the
playoffs 5 times in the 1980’s and moved to the Meadowlands Stadium in
1984. Since then they’ve continued to sell out every seat.
The Jets are currently using Giants Stadium to house their home games,
but they have big plans in the works for a possible future stadium, the
New York Sports and Convention Center. It hopes to be a facility that
will be able to host concerts, super bowls, soccer games, conventions
and a plethora of other events. The Jets would also like to be playing
back in Manhattan, where they consider to be home. The new stadium will
be environmentally efficient, as it plans to use the powers of the sun,
wind and rain electricity and cooling.
