New England Patriots:
On November 22nd, 1959, Billy Sullivan Jr. was granted an AFL franchise.
In a “Name the team” contest the nickname “Patriots” was selected by a
panel of judges, Boston sportswriters. One of the main concerns in the
Patriots first decade was finding a home field. 1960 and 1961 the
Patriots were at Boston University Field. In 1962 they were at Harvard,
and from 1963 to 1969 they played at the home field of baseball’s Boston
Red Sox, Fenway Park. In 1970 they found themselves back at Harvard.
That all changed when two important things happened in 1971 – The team
changed their name from the Boston Patriots to the New England Patriots
and then moved to a new stadium 25 miles south of Boston in Foxborough.
After the AFL-NFL merger the Patriots hit a slump with a string of
losing seasons. They rallied back to playoff contention in the late
1970’s and won the AFC Eastern title in 1978 and came close again 1979.
In 1988 ownership of the franchise was taken over by Victor K. Kiam and
in 1992 ownership changed again to James. B. Orthwein. In 1994 the
reigns shifted again to Robert Kraft, who is still currently the owner
and chairman of the franchise. In 1996 the team appeared at their second
Super Bowl and in 2001 new coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom
Brady led the Patriots to their first Super Bowl win. In 2003 they
repeated the feat with a second Super Bowl win against the Carolina
Panthers.
Gillette Stadium in Foxborough Massachusetts is the home of the New
England Patriots and has many points of interest unique the New England
heritage including a bridge and a lighthouse that sit atop the Fleet
Entrance. There’s a seating capacity of 68,000 and it’s grand opening
was on September 9th, 2002. The Stadium has 2 giant screens measuring
48’ x 27’. There’s also over 2,000 separate sound sources and 1,000
different monitors placed throughout the stadium.
