The AFC West Kansas City Chiefs:

In 1959 after several unsuccessful attempts at acquiring an NFL franchise, Lemar Hunt did something that had a major impact on professional football, he founded the American Football League and served as it’s president in it’s inaugural season in 1960. A Texan himself, it seemed fitting that his own team was the Dallas Texans. Establishing his franchise in his hometown of Dallas meant direct competition from the NFL’s franchise also located in Dallas, the Dallas Cowboys. The Texans established themselves as one of the AFL’s most prominent teams when they won the AFL championship in their 3rd season in a game that was the longest running pro football game up to that point. In 1963 Hunt decided it would be wise to move the Texans to Kansas City. At that time the team became known as the Cheifs and continued their success with a second AFL Championship win in 1966. The Chiefs also became the first AFL franchise to compete in a Super Bowl competition. In 1969 they won a third title and became the only team in the AFL’s history to accomplish that feat. At Super Bowl IV the Chiefs pulled out a win over the much favored Minnesota Vikings. That game became the last game ever played by an AFL team. The AFL disbanded but not without making significant impressions in pro football in the 1960’s. The Chiefs went on to win the AFC Western Division Championship in 1971 and then dropped out of playoff contention until 1986. The chiefs have seven hall of famers including Lamar Hunt.

The Chiefs started out playing at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City. In 1972 they moved into Arrowhead Stadium, where they still call home. Arrowhead Stadium is said to be one of the finest facilites in the world. Many venues similar to Arrowhead have not withstood the test of time. The preservation of Arrowhead Stadium is due in great to the Jackson County’s leadership. Kansas City’s home field advantage is far better than any other NFL franchise. The Chiefs fans have sold out the Stadium 43 consecutive times since 1992. The Chiefs hold an outstanding 27-5 record at home. The stadium went to a natural playing surface in 1994 and a state of the art Jumbo Tron was installed. Arrowhead Stadium seats 78,097.
