Indianapolis Colts:
Baltimore was granted a National Football League franchise in 1953 after
the Dallas Texans franchise was cancelled, leaving an opening for a
team. In a challenge presented by NFL Commissioner Bert Bell, Baltimore
had to sell 15,000 season tickets in a six week period to be awarded the
franchise. Baltimore responded by taking just over four weeks to meet
the challenge. On January 23rd, 1953 Caroll Rosenbloom was announced as
the owner of the new franchise. Weeb Ewbank was brought in as head coach
in 1954 and he implemented a building program for his team. He brought
his team over .500 in 1957 and the Colts maintained winning seasons for
the next 14 years. In 1958 the Colts overpowered the New York Giants in
overtime during the NFL Championship game to take the victory in what
was the largest televised audience to date. Don Shula replaced Ewbanks
as head coach in 1963 and brought the Colts to an NFL western Conference
Division title in 1964 and again in 1968. In 1970 Shula moved to Miami
and the Colts moved the American Football Conference with the merger of
the AFL and NFL, where they won the AFC Eastern title and then triumphed
in Super Bowl V. Ted Marchibroda took over as head coach and the Colts
went on to win 3 consecutive Division titles. After that the Colts hit a
slump and didn’t recover for five years. In 1982 Colts owner Caroll
Rosenbloom and Los Angelas Rams owner Robert Irsay swapped franchises.
On March 28th, 1984 Irsay made the decision to move the Colts to
Indianapolis where they still reside.
The RCA Dome, home of the Indianapolis Colts, was constructed in 1984 as
an expansion for the Convention Center. Costing $77.5 million the
originally named Hoosier Dome became host to national and international
events. The RCA Dome has a seating capacity of 57, 890.
