Denver Broncos:
August 14th, 1959 marked the the day that Bob Howsam was granted an AFL
franchise. Not having many financial resources to build his team on,
Howsam had to clothe his team in used uniforms that were leftover from
the copper bowl in Arizona. The unappealing uniforms made the Broncos
somewhat of a joke to the football industry. During the 10 year tenure
of the AFL the Broncos had a fairly dismal record sprinkled with only a
few highlights. They came up with a victory over the Patriots on
September 9th, 1960 to win the first AFL game. They were also the first
franchise to play in a game opposite an NFL team as they got the victory
over the Detroit Loins on August 5th, 1967. In 1965 the broncos got the
boost that they needed when Gerald and Allen Phipps bought the franchise
along with the 34, 657 seat Bears Stadium after it was threatened that
the team would be bought out by Atlanta interests. Fans enthusiasm for
the Broncos exploded and they purchased nearly 23,000 season tickets,
trouncing the year before sales of under 8,000 season tickets. 1973
found the Broncos having their first winning season ever with a 7-5-2
record. Their hard work from that point on has brought the franchise 7
AFC western titles, 4 AFC titles, and 2 Super Bowl victories. The
Broncos are one of few teams who have achieved back to back Super Bowl
wins.
The Broncos play at the state of the art Invesco Field which was built
in 1998. It stands almost on top of where the Mile High Stadium used to
stand. Invesco Field used a lot of what made Mile High Stadium unique to
the Broncos. It’s seating is exceptionally close the playing field and
the risers and treads are made of steel so the fans can make the near
deafening “Rocky Mountain Thunder” that came to be a trademark of Mile
High Stadium. Invesco Field seats 76, 125.
