Baltimore Ravens:
Professional football returned to Baltimore in 1996 with the Baltimore
Ravens. Inspired by one time Baltimore resident Edgar Allen Poe, the
team was named “Ravens”. Then owner Art Modell said, “Ravens gives us a
strong nickname that is not common to teams at any level, and it gives
one that means something historically to this community.” 21 years after
Ted Marchibroda was hired by then Baltimore Colts, he was named as head
coach for the Ravens. On September 1st, 1996 in the Ravens first ever
regular season game they came up victorious, beating the Oakland
Raiders, 19-14. A record crowd of 64,124 packed into Memorial Stadium to
witness the event firsthand. In 1999 Brian Billick was brought in as
head coach. With one of the strongest defenses in the NFL that allowed
the fewest points in a season in all of NFL history, Billick and his
Ravens went on to an electrifying win at Super Bowl XXXV.
M&T Bank Stadium is where the Baltimore Ravens call home. The Stadium
contains 3 tiers of seating, the lower level circling the entire field.
The mid level, or club seating, runs both sides of the field but not
behind the end zones. The upper level does circle the whole field but is
split up into sections so that parts of Baltimore can be seen. The
stadium has two video scoreboards located behind both end zones in the
middle tier. There are 100+ luxury suites and 8,196 club seats with a
total seating capacity of 69,084. It has a natural grass playing surface
and the stadium overall was a cost of $220 million.
